Naturally however, the event was cancelled because of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-21226565\">Santa Maria tragedy<\/a>, where over 200 people died in a fire at a local nightclub. It shocked the country and the world, and celebrations were the last thing on any Brazilian\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ativaesporte.com\/brazil\/brazil-2014-under-500-days-and-counting\/attachment\/brasil-2014\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-630\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-630 aligncenter\" title=\"Brasil-2014\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ativaesporte.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Brasil-2014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"392\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Three days later, an official video with a compilation of\u00a0work to date was released, together with the\u00a0tournament poster (pictured above).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VxeSNWCqRuI?feature=player_embedded\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Brazil is now within touching distance of hosting the FIFA World Cup for the second time in the country\u2019s history (the first being back in 1950) but interestingly, the man on the street is feeling both excited and slightly concerned at the same time. In spite of constant reassurance from\u00a0the government that everything will be ready by the kick-off in 2014, the average Brazilian still has a lot of doubts.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst there are some very big players working on the organization and infrastructure, corruption scandals in the past mean the people are still rather sceptical. Right now\u00a0only\u00a0two venues are complete, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/04\/03\/soccer-world-brazil-idUSL2E8F2GG820120403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the original budget has increased significantly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there is also some good news for the people. Mano Menezes, the former Brazil Team manager, who had the backing of neither media nor fans, has been sacked, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/sport\/football\/teams\/brazil\/9711890\/Luiz-Felipe-Scolari-appointed-new-Brazil-manager.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replaced\u00a0by Luiz Felipe Scolari<\/a>. \u2018Big Phil\u2019 took the\u00a0<em>Sele\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em>\u00a0to glory at\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/IBYXU7jUBHM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2002 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, and the Brazilian people still regard him as a winner.<\/p>\n<p>What strikes us the most is that up until now almost every FIFA World Cup sponsor has been very quiet. The most active of the\u00a0group is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/brahmaoficial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brahma<\/a>\u00a0(the local AB InBev beer brand), which has launched a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/0sRXCwvehrw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign to fight any \u2018national pessimism\u2019<\/a>. The brand reminds consumers that Brazil is going to stage the biggest party in history, and that any cynicism or worries will be long forgotten. This activation featured in our list of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.synergy-sponsorship.com\/blog\/20121218\/the-top-5-brazilian-sports-marketing-campaigns-of-2012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the top 5 Brasilian sports marketing campaigns of 2012<\/a>\u00a0back in December.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itau.com.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ita\u00fa<\/a>, the country\u2019s biggest private bank, also began their World Cup 2014 campaign last year, but have, so far, failed to create the same kind of buzz generated by Brahma.<\/p>\n<p>With the FIFA\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fifa.com\/confederationscup\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Confederations Cup<\/a>\u00a0approaching fast, and\u00a0a new ticket sales record just set, it is clear that there\u2019s palpable excitement amongst Brazilians about the upcoming events. We might like to criticize our country, but that\u2019s just a cultural thing: most importantly, we are also very proud of hosting these global events.
